Think Healthy Means Expensive? Think Again

There are two main reasons why you might be hesitant to live a healthier lifestyle:

  1. The right information isn’t always available
  2. The cost of healthier food and products are more expensive

I wrote this blog to hopefully increase #1, but to also help shine light on #2. I’ll share with you what I learned that helped me put the cost of my health into perspective.

I am a distributor, user, and lover of Young Living Essential Oils, which are 100% therapeutic-grade essential oils that go through a rigorous Seed to Seal process. Because of the thorough process each oil goes through to ensure it is pure and authentic, Young Living’s essential oils usually cost more than oils you might find at the grocery store or online from a bulk product website. The higher cost doesn’t deter me because I know that I am purchasing quality oils, but not only that, I know that I am investing in my health, and I can’t put a price on that. I use essential oils everyday as part of my wellness regime. Since choosing to live a healthier lifestyle (working out, eating right and limiting toxic chemicals in products I use topically and consume internally) I have been able to stay out of the doctor’s office and pharmacy line. In turn, I’ve also been able to avoid the costs that come along with them. I learned very quickly that if you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned about health came from a pet store. For a while I was feeding my cat the same brand that I was given when I adopted him, and didn’t think anything of it. When I got to the pet store one day I was annoyed to find out that they no longer carried the food my cat was used to eating. This was the second store I had gone to and both stores had previously carried that brand of food for indoor cats.

When I ask someone restocking shelves for some insight, he told me that more and more stores were eliminating pet food that had fillers (no nutritional value) and took the time to go from aisle to aisle and explain the differences of some other options. He showed me ingredient lists that had chicken and other real ingredients as some of the main constituents in the food, with no gluten, and no grains. I was thrilled that I could now give my cat food that would help him live a healthier life. To my surprise the cost of the bag was almost double the price of what I normally purchased, and the bag was also a lot smaller. He saw the sticker shock all over my face and explained that this food wasn’t made of fillers like the kind I was used to. I would be able to feed him smaller amounts, that would make the bag last longer and that my cat would now go to the bathroom less because he was absorbing more nutrients in each meal. Win, win if you ask me.

That trip to the pet store got me thinking about my own meals as I walked through the grocery store. Yes, the food that was good for me cost more but I would be absorbing more nutrients to fuel my body and limiting the fillers and chemicals that I was consuming. Another win, win.

This trip to the market cost me less than $10

Here’s another way to look at it. If you eat cheap but unhealthy foods, you are filling your body with carbs, sugar and toxic chemicals that may lead to being overweight, or disease. Anyone who has been sick knows that doctor’s visits and medicine, even for the common cold, can be expensive. Would you rather spend money on healthy food for meals you can make rather than food from a box, or on non-toxic products to help keep you healthy rather than on things that would bring you back to health? Would you rather invest in yourself when you’re healthy or when you’re sick?

Here’s another great example of how healthy alternatives can “look” expensive. The same amount of ounces in a leading laundry soap washes half as many loads as Thieves Laundry Soap. The other difference? Look at the ingredients list. Those are chemicals that you are putting on the largest organ of your body, day after day after day. The more you know…
