After my favorite mascara was discontinued (still confused as to why it was discontinued. It left my lashes long, curled and separated all day long!) I did some research on mascara that was on the dryer side and came across a lot of waterproof options. I ended up giving them a try and discovered two things 1) it was everything I had dreamed of in a mascara (lifts, elongates and separates without looking like I had two spiders on my face) and 2) taking it off of my face was like trying to remove concrete. My normal, gentle, non toxic face wash wasn’t budging it so I took to Pinterest and found that a lot of women were using coconut oil to remove their makeup. I figured I would give it a whirl.
After using coconut oil to remove my makeup for a few days, I discovered two things, 1) that it actually works and 2) that it is the longest time I have ever spent washing my face or removing makeup since birth. Not to mention coconut oil is very thick and left my face very oily. I took to Pinterest again, determined to find something that wasn’t filled with chemicals (a lot of recipes call for baby oil) and something that left my face feeling clean, not slippery.
I read a lot of great recipes, reached out to my sister and a couple of my friends to see what they used, and came up with a great combo that I thought would be best for my combination skin (my t-zone and chin tends to get oily but throughout the day my skin lacks moisture). Here is what I came up with!
DIY Makeup Remover:
1/2 cup of hot water
2 tbs of coconut oil
1/4 tsp of pure castile hemp almond soap
organic cotton rounds
5 drops frankincense essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
- Fill a glass measuring cup up to 1/2 cup with very hot water. Scoop in coconut oil and let sit until fully melted and swirl around.
- Fill an 8oz glass container with organic cotton rounds to the top.
- Add the essential oils and castile soap to the ingredients and poor over the organic cotton rounds.
It not only removes makeup but leaves skin feeling moisturized and fresh!
